Why is there different sizes of hail stones?
In the UK where I live the hail stones are quite small, but in other places like some parts of the USA they are huge. Why is there such a difference?
Mostly it will have to do with the amount of pollution and water vapour in the air where the incident occurs.
The more pollution and the more water vapour the larger the stones. The temperature variation in air layers will also greatly influence size.
The hail will mostly occur where very moist air lies just above some very cold air and also will depend upon the cold air being stationary while the warm air is moving rapidly causing the warm air to "roll" above the cold air or sometimes a cold air draft penetrating warm moist air such as can happen with the jet stream.
