   Renaissance, in the popular sense, of English, means, "Revival" ... of something, which has long been absent from the scene.
   
   But if you mean "the Renaissance" representing, 14th to 16th century Revival of Arts, Literature, and Sciences etc.. During Europe's Dark ages ... That  Renaissance began as an Intellectual Movement, for the Revival of Greek and Roman glory, through knowledge.
   
   Muslims were the Conveyors of this lost knowledge,so the Europeans, picked up the Threads from the point, where the Muslims had left the scene...
   
   It began in Europe ... Specifically Italy. Its major figures are Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Dante Gabriell Rossetti; numbers of Philosophers, such as Machiavelli, and Erasmus ... 
   
   Shakespeare, Newton, and James Watt can be considered a part of the English version of Renaissance, in the Subsequent centuries.

   Great answer; just as an addendum, the popular usage nowadays refers to someone with diverse talents/abilities.  Ironically, I used this term in my bio that I just made a few minutes ago...lol

   Just like Shahid said, but I always heard it was 'rebirth' which is very similar in description to his statement.

   Renaissance is a French word, which, literally translated, means 'rebirth.' However, in contemporary American popular culture, it often means 'renewal.'
