I used to teach English some time ago. I'd say, teaching foreign languages is often organized in topics. Topics are good, I think, they help to better organize the teaching process, and tune grammar, new words, and typical situations in. Like, when you are in "Greeting" (which is the ultimate opening topic for the most of the time), you study phrases on how to introduce yourself, but also personal pronouns and the verb "to be" in the Present Simple Tense for grammar, foreign names for vocabulary, etc.
