Who was Biddy Mason and why is she an important part of Los Angeles History?
She was an African American who was a slave originally...but eventually won her freedom in California. She was one of the first colored ladies to purchase land of her own. She founded a number of establishments, one of them being an elementary school. She was also a midwife and a businesswoman.
Sooo basically she was important because she paved the road for other African Americans to seize and achieve their dreams!
