What are some ways, which people try to make a lasting impression?
Whether you are going to a job interview, and want to make a lasting impression on a potential new employer..., or you are dying and want to leave a legacy behind; what are some ways that you might use to achieve this task? People through out time have tried many ways to leave a lasting impression. From the Pyramids of Mesoamerica and Egypt to the Trans-Siberian Railroad- great men and women want their names to remain a fixture on this planet. The average person is not oblivious to this desire. What will you do?
Unless you can identify a specific, practical reason why you want to leave a lasting impression, it's usually best, in my limited experience, to just ignore that impulse. It's maladaptive. We try to impress everyone on purpose, and the end result is that people are impressed by qualities that aren't really ours; they get to know us better, and they feel betrayed. This is true whether we're trying to impress an employer, a prospective romantic partner, or future generations: if we're making a conscious effort to be more impressive than we ordinarily are, we're only setting folks up for disappointment later.
