In the entirety of the conflict, what do you think was the best World War II fighter plane that the Americans used?

I used to play a lot of WW2 flight sims when I was younger, and the best American plane in my opinion was the P51 Mustang. Its speed and manoeuvrability were unmatched, and almost always came out on top in a dogfight.

The P51 Mustang was not only the best American fighter, but arguably the best fighter of the war. Aside form its individual capabilities, it also probably had the greatest impact and was responsible for more kills than any other allied aircraft. Had outstanding range so could serve as an escort fighter and was quite capable in ground attack roles. Outstanding aircraft.

For sheer coolness, I always liked the P38 Lightning.
