What Exactly Is Telomeres or Telomere?

What are telomeres? What is their function? What do telomeres have to do with chromosomes?

A region of repetitive nucleotide sequences at the end of a chromosome. It protects the end of a chromosome from deteriorating. It has been compared to the ends on shoe laces that prevent wear. Each chromosome consists of a molecule of DNA. and in a repetitive sequence. It is said that the Telomeres protect our DNA and may hold the key to aging and cancer cures. There has been some information lately on the news about aging and a possible cure that prevents it. Also a cure for cancer may be concealed in the research on the telomeres, They allow cells to divide without losing DNA. Without the telomeres present each time a cell divides it would lose DNA and this is what nature has provided to prevent his from happening right away. Over time the telomeres wear out and cells may die. This is a natural occurence and part of aging. If we could prevent the telomeres from wearing away, perhaps this may be a clue in preventing rapid aging processes. This may be related in some way to the protection of the myelin sheath in cells and preventing diseases of the central nervous system, such as Multiple Sclerosis.
