The Bayonet : a knife or sword, weapon designed to fit on, over or underneath the muzzle of a rifle or musket. It might have appeared in 17th century France. Who invented the bayonet..I do not know the person but I think it came France.
The bayonet was invented by the French.
The bayonet originated from the French town of Bayonne in about 1640, when musketeers from that town charged their enemy with knives stuck in the ends of their firearms.
The charge was so successful that a French officer ordered a number of round-handled swords to be made specially so that they would fit into the musket muzzles. This was the first 'plug' bayonet. With this type the musket could not be fired while the sword was in place.
The 'ring' or 'socket' bayonet that fitted around the muzzle was introduced in about 1670 or 1680 allowing it to be fired with the bayonet in position. The Duke of Marlborough made great use of ring bayonets in the English campaigns against the French.
