What programming languages are used today in Bioinformatics?
I'm starting graduate school in Molecular Biology this fall and, while I love bench work, I'd really like to pick up some extra skills and be "the computer guy" in whatever research group I become a part of if I can. I have a computer science background, but haven't programmed in years, so I'd be learning almost from scratch, but should be able to breeze through any basics.
Okay, so what are the most popular languages and tools used in Bioinformatics today? What should I spend my time learning?
Perl and SQL are the usual programming languages widely used today in Bioinformatics. Learning them will be of great help in the cutting edge research.
