What is the best way to lower the world's human population to 500 million and keep it that way?
Without giving up your humanity? none. Of course, if you don't care about that you could go with something like:
Having a maximum age limit of 55, anyone older must be "put down" along with a limit to how many children you are allowed to produce, like 2 per mother and if they are of the same gender one would have to be killed and then she could try again until she finally gets one boy and one girl - of course with genetic science where it's at today you could just send her in to make sure she gives birth to the correct gender of child.
Or you could go with another Holocaust approach and get rid of whomever you feel is "undesirable" and unworthy of living....
If you actually have a heart and soul, I guess you'll just have to wait for some natural disasters to wipe some more people out, old age, disease, and the crazies who like to go on killing sprees.
How does one surrender their individual humanity to preserve our humanity collectively? Dare I ask such a question, but there must be some other way to preserve our universal tribe without murder. Would it be inhumane if people volunteered to die?
May I ask how you arrived at 500 million as the ideal number of humans on the planet at a time? Do you have this calculated down to how many should be in each country or on each continent?
Interesting you say "two per mother" but don't mention a father. If you're going to talk about controlling birth population, why not forced vasectomies to men with 2 children? Easier & safer than abortions, more humane than killing live kids.
because women give birth, not men. a man can father 10 children with 5 women and still only have 2 per mother... clip too many men & that's exactly the choice you'd leave women with if they want kids.
Um...assuming the current population is 7 billion, the "best" as in the most efficient way would be a virus that kills 1 out of 14 people and instantly turns them into zombies who cremate or bury themselves in an orderly fashion. To keep it that way, see Momkat's answer.
Amusing as this answer may seem, why would someone need to be zombified? "Zombification" of the mind is precisely what we are avoiding. Is there not another solution besides extermination? Think as if you were programming a master intelligence.
why 500 million? this planet can easily support our current population if we do things right. the problem is that there is too big of a devide between the rich and the poor.
From an ecological, economical and overall global societal stand point the world this size would operate most efficiently and effectively at a population of five hundred million to two billion people, thus adverting excessive loss of life.
It would help a great deal, less suffering for animals and humans.
Raise the economic standards of living for millions of people worldwide so that they have options to licentious breeding. I’m just sayin’
What criterium would you include in such a licensing process?

Have we reached the maximum human population carrying capacity? If you refer to the picture, this can be observed when viewing population of bacteria growing in a petri dish. If Earth is the petri dish, where do you think humans are on this chart? Is our population about to crash?

Why didn't God create two first couples to seed the human population? If God was all-powerful, why did he not create two genetically distinct couples to start the human population rather than requiring the offspring of Adam and Eve to practice incest? This seems unusual considering that incest...

What evidence would tell us if human population has exceeded the Earth's carrying capacity?Earth's human population currently stands at 7 billion and is on target to double in 70 years. Clearly, it seems, at some point human population will be greater than the planet's resources--food, clean water,...
