a desire by Germany, Italy and Japan to take over the world and to impose their will. Hitler was completely insane!
Maybe all started after the end of WWI. Germany felt humiliated after the war and with Hitler in power, there was a desire for revenge and domination by a superior race.
When Hitler decided to invade Poland to get their territories back(lost in the WWI), France and Great Britain did not accept such invasion, that was the beginning.
It turned a World War since Japan also wanted to gain territories and decided to attack the USA, after that attack, it was no longer an "European War", it was a World War between Allies (France, UK, USA) and Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan), with the participation of Soviet Union side by side with the Allies, since the Axis powers were common enemies.
The war was caused because France and Britain did not want Germany to become a powerful enemy again. The dissolution and bankruptcy of the German Empire that was imposed by France, Britain, and Italy after the World War I led to the crumbling of German society and the rise of a radical nationalist government there. This government broke treaty agreements by building up an army and re-annexing the newly-created German-speaking nations to make Germany whole again. France and Britain made concessions to allow this since the old wounds of WWI had been scabbed over by the new economic problems all over Europe and the fear of Communism. France and Britain's appeasement of Germany in the 1930s was due completely to their fear of the spread of Communism into their countries. Next, the German and Soviet governments invaded Poland to create buffer states in preparation for war against one another (Russian society had also collapsed due to World War I and was taken over by a radical nationalist Soviet government). It was this unauthorized military invasion of Poland that terrified the French and UK governments into declaring war on Germany. They did this in order to keep Germany from becoming too expansive and powerful. Germany did not particularly want to fight France or the UK, preferring to prepare for war against the Soviets. So Germany signed a peace treaty with the Soviets in order to fight the western powers. The new Fascist Italian government had already conquered Ethiopia, Libya, and Albania with authorization and no European country lifted a finger. But since German was now at war with France and the UK, Italy (as Germany's recent ally) was forced to invade British-Egypt from Italian-Libya. The Italian government didn't want war with the western powers, but had hoped on conquering Greece. And that's how World War II in Western Europe and North Africa began.

Since the Republicans seem to hop into territories they have no clue about, let me join the party and point out something, but this time I point out some facts and not my opinion on them. What's your take on this ? Some interesting discussions here .

What was the reason for world war I?

Another lie that we've been fed to. I've learnt like everybody that the Allies declared war to Germany because it invaded Poland on Sept 1939, the truth is different. Georges VI's speech says it all! You will notice that the style is the copycat of the one we use to justify our invasions...
