Is it worth it to return to college and finish your degree knowing the financial burden?
From an adult student's point of view, is it worth it to return to college and finish your degree with the rising student loan interest rates? Does the end justify the means? I have minimum college debt from earning previous credits at other institutions. Is it worth returning and finishing, even if that means more student loan debt? I am looking for the perspective of an adult student, someone who left school and then returned to finish their degree and used student loans to do so.
In all honesty, it depends on your major/field. I did return to school a few years ago and only have 15 or 17 credits left (can't remember the exact number). Unfortunately I had to drop out for a year to care for my son after an accident and some other pressing personal issues and to finish now, I don't think is worth the financial burden. For me, it is because of my major "web design and development" In my case, education matters, but experience matters more. Not only are the courses I had left to finish outdated now, they also take me away from continuing to work and build my portfolio. I have a lot of clients and don't really feel that getting that piece of paper is going to be worth the expense and time it takes for me to drive 45 minutes each direction to campus etc.
People in other fields and majors of course will have different options to weigh so I guess the answer is really research your field, find out if it is projected to increase/decrease in the next several years and what the job outlook is like in that field. If the numbers aren't good consider changing programs or maybe just working instead.
