Diffusion is the spontaneous movement of particles from one area of high concentration to another area of lower concentration. Diffusion typically occurs among gas or liquid molecules. An example of the diffusion process at work is the release of fragrance molecules into the air; they move from the can or bottle into the atmosphere, where they diffuse and spread. Osmosis is defined as the spontaneous movement of water particles across a semi-permeable membrane. An example of osmosis is the movement of water into the hair, or water molecules being absorbed from the ground and into plant roots
