Maths is a kind of tough subject if you don't know the basic formulas and theorems. Further, a simple mistake can do the whole answer wrong. But other subjects are not like that. If you attempt something even though not properly, you can get some marks in it. So, children are afraid of maths and maths teachers.
But, if you can encourage the child by making him get interested in it and love the subject through your guidelines, he can stop fearing it and even grasp it very easily, once the fear has gone. You should tell him that it is the only subject in which he can score 100% marks.

Very good answer. I've also found that students are afraid to make mistakes and so they won't even try. Math is a subject that you have to continually practice to become good at; but students always want a "shortcut."
