Will humans cease to exist before they colonize another planet/moon?
There are a few catastrophic events that could eliminate the human population from earth in the near term - asteroid impacts, supermassive volcano eruptions triggering other geologic events, for example. There are numerous other events that could set our existence back for many years - nuclear war, global pandemic, etc. Do you think we'll make it to another planet with sufficient population to survive a human extinction or dramatic reduction on Earth?
If monotheism starts to go away, there is a chance. Right now there are far too many humans who believe the earth is it for us and that the end of humanity will bring about the Kingdom of Heaven. When people stop believing this nonsense, they will be more motivated to cooperate, explore and make progress.
