Why do some able bodied adults routinely EXPECT, INSIST, & even DEMAND
that family members OUGHT to financially support them because the former want to live a more affluent lifestyle but on OTHERS' dime, never theirs?
For some they are just lazy, and for others they are actually rather smart. There are many studies on utilization and output which shows that successful people many times are not the strongest or hardest workers, but are those who can organize resources for a specific cause. In the case of your question, the cause is their own well being. For instance, if I am a salesman and get 50% commission on the sale of everything I sell and I sell one item an hour for $100. I can make $50 an hr. However, if I spend less time pounding the pavement and more time convincing other to work for me and convince them to get 40% Commission and I keep 10%; well if I can get enough people under me I can make the same money by getting more people to work under me and just manage the situation. For many people if they had the charisma, charm, etc to get others to give up resources they would do it, so that the charmer could devote his energies to his interests. This is no different than graduate students who want or expect someone to subsidize his studies so he can focus on his/her coursework, while another student must work nights and go to school days to get ahead. For the graduate student we do not see it as using another's resource because we "assume" this person will give something back to society. However, if someone uses welfare benefits for a while and then writes a book we look down on them (Yes I am using the Harry Potter author situation I heard about). In her case, she did not demand public assistance, but knew it was there when she no longer had a job. However, in Rowling's case she was not expecting an affluent lifestyle on the dole.
"The Millionaire Next Door" book discusses this in the section on economic outpatient care. When you give money to someone so they don't have to work or not work as hard, they inflate their lifestyle to fit the "income" and the wealthy person loses net worth while preventing the gift recipient from growing their net worth. They get trained to spend all the "gifts" and rely upon it.
Government welfare and subsidies have a similar effect, especially with welfare cliffs that say "earn one dollar more than this, lose your housing and cheap utilities, and you won't earn the double amount needed to have as much disposable income left".
Exactly, many poor people contend that they are entitled to their more affluent relatives' money & EXPECT them to support them. I have poorer family members who EXPECT others to support them. My father called them parasites. I AGREE wholeheartedly
