Is education and career development classes introduced in high school?
I never received any form of counseling or class in those areas at high school - 70's. I did once I arrived at the community college. But, I think it may be too late these days. I know the junior year is when one should know where to attend college and begin seeking to achieve entrance. I know the ACT and SAT are given the spring of junior year(?) But, should there be classes about 'how to' develop a path in education and career before then? What about testing for best fit with aptitude throughout high school? Things change with learning.
I can't speak for general education, but for special education there are programs for learning how to get a job and actually working in a job. I did a hub on Workability. Usually my district works with the Department of Rehabilitation to aid students who may not go to college (or can't due to disability). As a result of the partnership, some of us will teach career awareness courses and, sometimes, observe the students while they work. Luckily, something like this was written into IDEA.
