Please read this interesting piece of Australian history by Fran Rooks:

I enjoyed this article Fran. It is one of the most famous explorations in our history, although many other explorers also perished trying to cross the continent.

Fascinating story. A gruelling and grim adventure. II wonder if Patrick White based his 1957 novel ‘Voss’ after  this expedition? Great book by the way. Thanks for posting John.

This is an interesting account about two leaders leading to an expedition in Australia where because of their lack of skills as explorers, both of them perish. It was good to know there was a survivor from this expedition. Thank you so much for this wonderful article, Fran.

Thank you John for sharing Fran's post.

This is a story about blundering idiots who should not have been allowed out without adult supervision.

Among the supplies they took with them was a dining table and chairs and 1,500 pounds of sugar. Imagine, a trek in the bush while carrying three quarters of a ton of sugar. I would not be surprised to hear they considered taking a harmonium along with them.

Successful explorers learned to travel light and live off the land.

Yes, why people with no experience in exploration decided to go on these arduous treks is beyond me. Now, should they have taken 1,500 pounds of rutabagas instead I have no doubt they may have survived the journey, or at least sought out the Aboriginals for help rather than firing shots to frighten them away.

This account was interesting to read.  If what Rupert Taylor wrote is true, it seems that these explorers were ill-prepared to make such a journey.  Thanks Fran for writing about it, and John, for sharing it with us.
