      One side effect of the affliction was that if he laid down in bed, as we normally do, his breathing would stop. After a miserable existence as a fairground exhibition piece and torment by street urchins, he felt he'd earned his proper sleep and slipped away quietly. His skeleton is in the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, London E1, and the rest was cremated at the City of London Cemetery in Aldersbrook (Manor Park end of Aldersbrook Road), East London. A memorial plaque marks where his ashes were interred in the Memorial Garden (near where two of the Ripper's victims' memorials are, one of the police inspectors who investigated the case is buried elsewhere in the same cemetery).

      John Hurt as Merrick, Anthony Hopkins as the surgeon who befriended him and supporting cast were first rate performers, Freddie Jones being the showman who exhibited Merrick. The film was shown here as "The Elephant Man", and scooped eight Academy Awards.

         Thank you for your visit and comments.  And I remember seeing the movie "MASK," which was heartbreaking.  Merrick had an extremely rare medical problem, yet somehow he was such a gentle soul.
