Aamir Khan's Satyamev Jayate - Female Foeticide in India

Updated on January 2, 2016

Aamir's First Talk Show

Satyamev Jayate!

If you have not yet still seen Satyamev Jayate's promo and song, you might as well have been living under a rock! The ads are everywhere; the marketing of the show has been done exceptionally well to generate enough public interest. The good thing about this show is that it not another run-of-the-mill kind of talk show which is usually the norm when it comes to celebrities. Celebs have the power to make people listen to them -- so why aren't they using the media for this purpose? All we got till now were irrelevant talk shows with celebs interviewing other celebs. But Aamir Khan has a brought about a much needed change in scene. And how! He's using his voice to make people aware of the various issues that haunt our nation. On May 6th 2012, Satyamev Jayathe made its debut on the idiot box, and its impact has been such that Twitter in India was trending with topics like #SatyamevJayate, Female Foeticide, SMS Y to 5782711, #SMJ, O Ri Chiraiya in the show's first day itself. For a show to be trending on multiple topics in a single day on Twitter is a feat by itself. It shows how passionately people are reacting to the show -- which is exactly what Aamir wanted. To kindle that 'fire' within people, and to make them react. Idiot box is no longer an 'idiot' box every Sunday morning from 11 A.M to 12 P.M.

Female Foeticide - Episode 1

The very first episode was aired on 6th May 2012 on a number of channels across India.

Topic: Female Foeticide

Discussion: There is an alarming sex ratio discrepancy in many parts of India. The percentage of male population overtakes that of the female population and this difference cannot be ignored anymore. Why is there such a considerable difference in number? Reason: female foeticide. Girls are killed off in their mother's womb because they are just not wanted in the Indian society where bringing up girls is considered to be a burden. Here the parents alone are not responsible. The doctors who aid in abortion are equally if not more accountable and guilty for their selfish acts -- all in the name of money. A sting operation carried out many years ago by two journalists revealed how a large number of doctors in Rajasthan (around 140 in number) were willing to abort a baby girl in exchange of money. Unfortunately, the Medical Council of India has been less than efficient in canceling the license of the so-called doctors. These doctors are still practising, and still aiding parents in aborting their girl child. What can we do to eradicate female foeticide in India?

Cause: Push Rajasthan government to set up a fast track court to tackle female foeticide.

How to support this cause (in India): SMS Y to 5782711. This will donate 1 rupee for the cause.

Sex Ratio (India) from 1981 to 2011. In 2011, it has been reported that for every 1000 boys there are only 914 girls born live. This might seem like a small difference (if you take only 1000 boys), but consider this happening for a larger population!
