What to Expect From The New GI Joe Movie Sequel! Watch The New GI Joe Retaliation Trailer!

Updated on January 13, 2012

Based off the Hasbro toys I grew up on, as well as the Marvel Comic books and the 80s cartoon, the G.I. Joe movie sequel - G.I. Joe Retaliation - hits theaters on June 29th this summer by Paramount Pictures. With mixed reviews among fans and a low score of 1 and half stars on Rotten Tomatoes, will the new G.I. Joe movie, directed by John Chu, deliver for fans of The G.I. Joe world or even for movie fans in general?

Personally, I didn't think the first G.I. Joe was that bad, and I grew up with the 80s toys. Kung Fu grip, baby! Yes, I had Cobra Commander, Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Lady Jaye, and several of the Cobra soldiers, as well as Vipers. They all met their inevitable doom as I grew up. However, after looking at the G.I. Joe Retaliation trailer I'm really interested in seeing this one, and I know it will at least be entertaining.

Here's what we have to look forward to and what to expect for this new action-packed movie based on the beloved Hasbro Toys.

GI Joe Sequel Movie Cast - Which Characters Will Return

To mix things up and as if we didn't expect it from a movie sequel, the new sequel will introduce new characters from the G.I. Joe Universe. Only a handful of the original actors and characters will be returning.

So who are the characters and actors that are staying in the sequel?

Snake Eyes

Of course, Snake Eyes is returning. What would a G.I. Joe movie be without fan-favorite Snake Eyes? Ray Park, who also played Darth Maul in Star Wars The Phantom Menace and The Toad in the first X-Men movie, will once again return to bring more of his kick ass Kung Fu mastery to the role of Snake Eyes!

I met Ray Park at The Wondercon one year, and he's a really cool guy. I enjoyed his work as Snake Eyes, and am anxious to see more of what he will do with character in the sequel.

Storm Shadow

Uh, I guess the ninja assassin didn't die in the first G.I. Joe movie? It looked liked he did to me, so I'm quite interested in how this movie sequel explains that one. I'm sure they'll come up with something kooky as they always seem to do. But, then again, what would a G.I. Joe movie be without the classic and bitter rivalry between old Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes? Not a very good one, that's for sure!

So Byung Hun-Lee will reprise the role of Storm Shadow. Hopefully another showdown between the two will be even more intense than the first.

Duke

Yep, Duke will be back, and so will Channing Tatum who played him in the first one. Usually, I don't like it when movies start switching up different actors to play a certain character. On the other hand, I wouldn't object if they decided to get another actor to play Duke in the new G.I. Joe movie. Actually, I wouldn't have cared if they brought back the character for this sequel at all.

Zartan

Of course, the "Master of Disguise" is returning. His last scene in the first G.I. Joe movie Rise of the Cobra did set up a sequel after all, right?

It sure did and now Zartan is the President of the United States of America (or should I say Cobra?) , all hell is about to break loose. For sure.

Arnold Vosloo returns to play the role of Cobra's coveted "Master of Disguise" character. The ultimate Cobra mercenary...Well, that's what his file card says, but in the movie he seems more like a spy.

Didn't he come with like a swamp craft thingy in the Hasbro toyline? I wonder why they didn't put that in the first film? Hehehe.

U.S. President

Actually, it's really Zartan returning as The U.S. President. The character of the United States President returning is unknown. Nobody knows what happened to him except that Cobra had captured him and Zartan is now pretending to be him.

Since Zartan has taken the guise of The President of the United States and pretending to be him, no doubt abusing all his power for the glory of Cobra, Jonathan Pryce will be returning to play The U.S. President for the G.I. Joe Retaliation sequel to cause a lot of headache for the Joes and mayhem for the rest of the world.

Cobra Commander would be so proud, don't you think?

Who Are The New Characters Appearing In G.I. Joe Retaliation?

Here's the new blood in this action-packed sequel:

General Joseph Colton

Bruce Willis will be adding more star power to the G.I. Joe sequel. He steps into the role of Joe Colton, legendary founder of the G.I. Joe elite special forces.

Roadblock

Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) will also be bringing some heavy star power for this action sequel as G.I. Joe's popular character Roadblock.

Lady Jaye

Move over Scarlett, here comes sexy and tough Lady Jaye, bringing some serious sexy to G.I. Joe Retaliation. Adrianne Palicki will play Lady Jaye - one of G.I. Joe's most favorite of female characters.

Flint

DJ Cotrona stars as Flint, and well he doesn't really remind me of this G.I. Joe character at all, who is the warrant officer of the G.I. Joe team. Flint is a master tactician according to G.I. Joe lore. Let's hope DJ Cotrona fits the bill, because Flint is an extremely popular G.I. Joe character.

Jinx

Another G.I. Joe martial arts badass. Jinx will beplayed by Elodie Yung. Elodie is a half French/half Cambodian actress who's been practicing Karate for ten years! Awesome! At least she really knows the importance of a Kung Fu Grip, and her costume looks like the character.

Mouse

Uhmmm..yeah, he's suppose to be a new Joe, young and brash, and played by Joe Mazzello.

Firefly

Another awesome Cobra mercenary and sabateur, and who better to play this kick ass villain role than the star of The Punisher Warzone movie, Ray Stevenson? If he can kick major butt in The Punisher Warzone, I can only imagine what he has in store for the Joes.

Blind Master

Rapper RZA will be playing the master who taught Jinx all the Kung Fu badness that she knows, as it is known in the G.I. Joe toy and comic world.

I'm assuming Blind Master won't be having a major role in the new sequel, and I'm not really sad about it either.

Who Won't Be Returning?

Well, as you can guess from the roster, quite a few characters and actors won't be returning for the sequel. Here's the list of characters and actors who were snuffed out of the sequel:

  1. Scarlett - Rachel Nichols
  2. Heavy Duty - Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje
  3. Baroness - Sienna Miller
  4. Destro - Christopher Eccleston
  5. General Hawk - Dennis Quaid
  6. Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Rex/Cobra Commander
  7. Ripcord - Marlon Wayans

Out of the whole list, I'm kinda sad to see Sienna Miller not return. She was absolutely hot as the raven-haired beauty - The Baroness. Although, it's confirmed that Joseph Gordon-Levitt won't be returning, it has yet to be confirmed whether the character of Cobra Commander will make an appearance or not.

Overall, The G.I. Joe Retaliation movie trailer looks good, and I'm actually anticipating an entertaining, action-packed ride here. What do you all think?
