What are the elements of a GOOD scary movie?

what is it that makes you cover your face and peek through your fingers?  what draws you in so much so that people like me just have to make you jump out of your seat?

I think it should be suspenseful, build you up and then shock you, but without gore and blood and all that stuff, for that ruins an otherwise perfectly good scary movie.  I love the ones that are quiet and just moving a long and then BAM something jumps out and scares you smile

The thing that scares me half to death is when you are watching a horror film and the so called ghost starts shaking really quickly like in the film Gothika! Really freaks me out and makes me want to run out of the room! lol!

Personally, I think that building suspense is the most effective part. Jump-style scares work in the immediate sense, but it's a lot harder to make your audience afraid than it is to just startle them. The first paranormal activity movie did it well with very little. A lot of people weren't fans of it, but the movie got you to focus on the dark hallway, expecting something horrible to happen. Despite the relatively small ghostly things that happened, it was a tense movie to watch. Especially if you're the kind of person who has ever experienced anything paranormal.

For me it is the combination of silence with expectation. I love a good horror movie which delivers a scene where it is deadly silent and you know something ominous is about to happen and then a sudden noise, be it a phone ringing or a tap at a window cuts through the silence and startles you.

Give me that anyday over modern gore which makes me turn away because it does nothing for me

Anything that can really get in the head of the viewer and make them question their safety while watching the movie or outside the movie. I mean something that just makes them question everything. An example would be like Nightmare on Elm Street, the most current movie, where you ask yourself one question when it's over: "What the Hell?"
lol Anything that scares the crap out of you. Another one off hand I remember is The Descent. It was only scary to me because everything popped out of the dark, it was underground, there was no escape, and I'm pretty sure everyone died or went crazy. Yes, I do scare easily!
