   What songs deserve the label "masterpiece?"
   
   Base you choices on originality, meaningful and poignant lyrics, staying power, and all that makes the song a classic and memorable tune.
   My pics: "Is it a Crime" by Sade, "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton (Whitney Houston's version), and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" Simon and Garfunkel's version.

   Hi Jan, The first song that comes to mind is "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zepplin. I do believe this song to be a masterpiece and it is timeless.

   "I dreamed a dream" from "Les Miserables". Anne Hathaway, Susan Boyle, and Ruthie Henshall, I feel, gave the best performances. At this point, that song is probably the most famous from the musical. It is heartbreaking and so beautiful! People will be singing it until the end of time.
   
   "Young and Beautiful" by Lana Del Rey (used in "The Great Gatsby"). I was absolutely stunned when I heard this one. It has a bit of a 1920s sound, but obviously uses modern chords and harmonies as well. This isn't another generic love song. Instead, it poses a legitimate question: "Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?" The song is new, so we'll have to see as far as staying power. But I think it is so gorgeous it will not easily be forgotten.

   "A Time For Us" from the 1968 version of "Romeo and Juliet". I love rock like Pink Floyd and the  Stones but, that song just oozed of love and passion without a lyric.

   "One" by U2.  I think it is musically and lyrically one of their greatest songs ever, and it is part of their best album to date.  It slowly builds into one of the greatest expressions of heartbreak - "you asked me to enter, and then you made me crawl"

   Hi Jan, I agree wholeheartedly with your choices 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' and 'I Will Always Love You'. There are so many posibilites, some already mentioned by others like 'Stairway To Heaven', but how about 'American Pie' or 'Vincent' by Don McLean' or 'Imagine' by John Lennon?

   I think it's "Hurt" by Johnny Cash (even though the song is originally by the Nine Inch Nails) because it has got so much power and just perfectly suits him. Cash died not long after the recording of the song giving it an even more meaningful tone as he is singing about his past (again, it just seems to be tailored for him).
