Who would you say is the greatest singer in rock history ?

I think this one is easy as he was the lead singer of my favourite band but he is no longer with us.

There have been and are many great singers, but, the best voice I have ever heard was Freddie Mercury.

In sheer volume and number of hits it would have to be Elvis, with Paul McCartney and Beatles a close second.

Have to agree with daytripeer that Freddie Mercury is the best.

Chuck Negron, formerly of Three Dog Night, if you really take the time to listen to his versatility,
    range, and pure beautiful sound.

The question was "greatest singer", not most influential or successful. So for pure vocal greatness, amazing vocal cords, wide octave range and perfect pitch, Chuck Negron is the best and under-rated. Most of his high notes are sung, not falsetto.
He did "ONE" in one take and also "Easy to be Hard" in one take.
He is still singing and has a great range. In concert, he does a long line-up and his voice is energetic, dramatic, and powerful all the way through. He's 67 years old, and has been singing publicly as an entertainer ever since he was 15.

The three part harmony he did with Three Dog Night blended magically. That also is a testiment to Chuck's talent as a great rock and roll singer. In some of the powerful songs they sounded like more that three guys singing. It was definitely some of the best rock and roll ever! The band took songs they knew would be hits and arranged them into unique master peices that showcased the vocals.
    Thank you for this question!

I would have to say Steve Perry of Journey has the most prettiest and talented singing voice of all time.

I can understand why Freddie Mercury is getting mentions however on a personal level my vote would go to (a very much alive) Bono of U2.

Amazing songs, peerless concerts and leader of a band who have been rocking the world for almost 30 years.

I agree with the Best Man, Daytripeer, and PrettyPanther that Freddie Mercury has the best voice and range.  Beautiful stuff.  But what about the emotion factor?  Hmrjmr1's suggestion of Paul McCartney is valid (listen to "Baby I'm Amazed" again).  Still, it has to be Freddie.

.....is there a right or wrong in this question - this is purely subjective of course - but my answer to your question is Jim Morrison - and my answer to my question would be:  Iggy Pop or Lux Interior of the Cramps .....

Hard to pick just one because there are so many greats and they have had such an influence on rock music in general. For me, those include:

Paul McCartney; Bono; Freddie Mercury; Mick Jagger; and Dave Matthews.
