I believe there are two answers to this question. The first one is, just because they can. The second answer is, some people have more money than they have brains.
Because they've already bought up all the practical stuff. At that points their desire to "spend money" leads them to purchase useless items they normally wouldn't buy had they not the cash.
Because they can, they have the excess cash to do what they want. To us it may seem like a lot but to them that hundred dollar shirt may only be pocket change like our 5 or 10 dollars. So it's all based on prospective really.
My question would be what's the deeper meaning of money anyway. What do you have money for if you cannot spend it on whatever your heart delights? And who has to decide what is a prudent thing to do with their money anyway? One man's dragon is another man's pet. What you might regard as stupid, someone else might regard as the best thing since the invention of sliced bread...
