Hey, dude, I'm afraid I don't know enough about James Brown's bass players to answer that question. Perhaps you can suggest a favorite. Go ahead, I won't mind. Thanks for the question, nevertheless. Later!
I first saw JB in 1969 when he had the James Brown Orchestra. All of James Brown bass players that I know of such as; Charles Sherell, Bernard Odum, Tim Drummond (white bass player from 1968-1969), David Weston and a few others that I can,t recall were all great. To me the absolute best bass player for JB was the great Bootsy Collins who was only 17 at the time. A monster bass player, Bootsy, along with his brother Phelps "Catfish" Collins on guitar, reinvented the JB sound with the JBs band.
James had many bass players over the years, and while yes Bootsy Collins may be the most well known, but imo Jimmy Lee Moore had best live sound.
It's Bootsy baby! And he is a great guy as well. But James certainly had many other phenomenal bassists over the years.
