In one episode, Hawkeye and Winchester were playing chess. Winchester exclaims to Hawkeye that...

he is playing the "Jan Cochovich" Gambit (spelling). Hawkeye replies that Winchester is playing the Jesse Owens gambit because he should run all the way to Berlin. The question is, who is Jan Cochovich? (spelling)... This reference is lost completely and I play chess moderately.

    Googling it found me this:

    "Winchester: Ah, the Yankakovich gambit!
    Hawkeye: Oh, yeah?
Winchester: Yankakovich perfected the strategy of making the most moronic move possible in order to lull his opponent. Well, I'm not gonna fall for it. (makes a move)
Hawkeye: (disappointed) Perhaps I should have tried the Jesse Owens gambit and run to Berlin."

The names of the gambits are not real chess strategies. As near as I can tell "Yankakovich" has no meaning outside of M*A*S*H and was just an invented  name meant to set Hawkeye up for the insult.
