How can any artist influence others that came 'before...' ?

Surely those that came before, influenced the artist

Since I mostly know about music and literature, I'll try and stick to those subjects...  It's hard to say, but many have said that Wagner influenced Liszt to some degree and vice versa, yet Wagner was born on 1813, and Liszt on 1811.  Likewise with Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, some have said that Dostoevsky uses some of Tolstoy's literary techniques in "Karamazov," yet Tolstoy was born about 8 years after him....  Not sure if this is the answer you're looking for, but here it is....

Good try, John; however, I deliberately didn't use birth dates, I got the idea from a question that had a reply that suggested that a certain group of musicians produced an album that influenced later musicians and some who came before, not born before, a little like saying Oasis influenced the Beatles.  Mmm, we could be on to a good S.F story here.
