Do good movies have to have good endings?

I just saw a good and well made movie, a suspense, science fiction, end of the world as we know it kind of movie, where it ends and almost all the actors, well, die is not right word, but you get the picture.  Why I post this question is because there were bad reviews by people looking for a positive happy ending.  The story was well portrayed and the actors believable, the special effects realistic.

Or can only movies with happy endings be "Good"?

No it is not neccessary for a film to have a happy ending to be good.  People often confuse good (quality) and happy (emotion).  The ending may or may not have been good from a qualty point of view; because an ending may have satisfied your emotions, the quality may have been poor (acting, direction, film, etc).

Not at all. As long as the story is well written and developed, it doesn't matter.

As a matter of fact, a lot of my favorite films don't have traditional "happy" endings: Seven, Chinatown, The Godfather films, Braveheart...
