Honestly, Black Sabbath.  Led Zeppelin are also contenders, but to many people they are just hard rock.

Black Sabbath definitely had a deep defining heavy sound that no one else had at the time. Their drummer Bill Ward, had the idea that people would pay money to be scared by a horror movie, why wouldn't horror music have the same effect.

The Yardbirds and then Led Zepplin.  Jimmy Page was given the Yardbirds's name on condition he played their last gig (Sweden).  He then formed the New Yardbirds, somene big in the music industry (can't remember who, Keith Moon, comes to mind) said the music will be as succesful as a lead zeplin, hence the origin of the name and heavy rock metal was born

Some interesting information here. Ive never personally thought of Zeppelin as heavy metal but i do see how their influence could spawn a heavier generation. I think the same goes for Deep Purple and Blue Cheer.

I think that LZ is seen as precuser of HM in the same way that JMW Turner is seen as a precurser to the Impressionists

Well to me Heavy metal was essentially a reaction to the clean-cut rock-n-roll of the 50s and 60s. It was the musical equivalent of jumping the Beach Boys in a dark alley and beating the crap out of them, and so it was harder, faster, darker, and more distorted. The first major group that I know of that really started this was the Blue Cheer and close to the same time, Cream, Hendrix, the Who, and the Kinks.

Some of the great early electric guitarists should get some credit such as Link Wray and Pat Hare. I kind of think the Doors should get a mention. Not necessarily for the music but for the dark mood and anti-establishment nature of their music. I suspect that had a pretty big impact on other musicians at the time (heck, it still does).

All of the bands you mentioned i think played a huge roll in the influence of hard rock and heavy metal. I'm a huge Doors/Jim Morrison fan and in my opinion they were, along with the who, one of the first punk rock bands. Thanks for your answer.

Heavy metal was founded in Europe. I believe some in or near Finland or at least that area. Americans adopted the style long after it had been around in Europe.
