If Johnny Cash "shot a man in  Reno, just to watch him die" Why is he in a California prison?

Hint: check out the lyrics of "Folsom Prison Blues"

All right, the gig is up.  Until today I was one of the select few to have been entrusted with safeguarding the secret of the original man in black, Mr Johnny Cash.

You see, until 1957 Reno was in California.  Most of you do not know this due to the massive reeducation efforts launched by the government in 1962 following the end of the war with the Zalamak Empire from the Andromeda Galaxy.  It was as a result of one of the great battles of this war that Reno was transposed from the California side of the border to the Nevada side.  It was also the same time that wearing skinny ties came into vogue due to the rationing of cloth for the Zalamkian war effort.

I seem to be straying off topic, anyway, Mr. Cash was at that time a covert operative for the government.  He had tracked down a known Zalamakian operative to Reno and had him cornered.  The fellow in question refused to answer the questions posed to him by Mr. Cash pertaining to the location of the central power core on the orbiting mother ship; so, Mr. Cash shot him just to watch him die.  This was a sound and acceptable practice at the time.  It was as common as smoking.

Sadly, at this same time Mr. Cash was still going through his methamphetamine days and the fellow in question was not a covert operative, he was in fact a polyurethane salesman from Cleveland attending a convention in Reno.

Needless to say, Mr.Cash was arrested, tried and convicted in what was still then Reno, California.

I hope this answers your question, but... please keep it to yourself.

PS-  The infamous and almost fatal encounter that Mr. Cash had with an ostrich in 1983 was also related to this original incident.  You see, the Ostrich, Moe Feaherbottom was his name, was related to the deceased salesman through a common ancestor which they both had 135 million years ago.  Vowing vengeance for the death of his distant relative at the hands of Mr. Cash, the ostrich launched his famous attempt to disembowel Mr, Cash.

Thanks Marisaupa, It all makes sense now. But I question your choice to disclose this highly classified information over the Internet. Doubtless by now you have received a visit from MIB and they have wiped any memory of this information out of your mind.

Okay now I will have to go to YouTube and find me some Johnny Cash to listen to LOL!

On a serious note, after he shot the man in Reno he took off running, they caught him and...uh...hmmm....let me get back to you.

the song "Folsom Prison", never really discloses why he got locked up, he's more pissed off he has to hear that lonesome whistle blow while locked up and imagine high society people enjoying themselves. I think he was framed from the same government he served loyal to for 15yrs, after he tried to denounce his position as G-22. Those Zalamakites sure do have clout to pull this off.....
