Why are we so obsessed with celebrities failing?
Why are we so consumed by the failures celebrities have? Rather it be drugs, violence, crime, or relationship problems. We seem to indulge in it
We want heroes and villains, I think, because it is a titillating distraction from our real lives. A healthy focus on our own humanity - including our own failings - is something most of us don't want to face. So we look for larger-than-life distractions - we make celebrities. Then we idealize them, hoping to have a roll model to imitate. Then they turn out to be ordinary human beings like all of us, with strengths and weaknesses. I wrote about this in my hub Lance Armstrong: Cancer Hero or Crooked Athlete.
