    No it is not, unless you consider the possibility of a huge Government Conspiracy plausible.

      I think that huge secret government projects are plausible. Successful examples include, but are not limited to: U2 plane, winning the Cold War, capturing Usama Bin Laden, the Manhattan Project, having the internet prior to when it was publicized...

      If the stargate series was based on actual events what makes you think that the government would allow such a program in the first place?

      The government would want a Stargate program because it makes travelling to distant worlds much easier and quicker. Also, it could be used to bring the human population of the planet down to carrying capacity without having anyone killed.
