What's the best movie based on a TV show?
Updates of Bewitched, Miami Vice, and Speed Racer, among many others have made it to the big screen.
I really liked "The Addams Family" movie from 1991 with Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia. I think it's a very nice tribute to the original show - even though the movie adds a few things that they, ahem, couldn't put on TV in 1960s! The first movie is hilarious but they were trying to milk it a bit with making "Addams Family Values" in 1993.
I also liked the 1993 "Beverly Hillbillies". I didn't like Diedrich Bader as Jethro, but Cloris Leachman as Granny was unbelievably fabulous.
The Mission: Impossible series (except the second one)
I guess that I would have to say Superman. It started as a comic in the paper, I believe. Then it was a comic book. After that or at the same time, I am not sure, came the TV show, and finally the films.
The best movie based on a TV show has to be The Fugitive. The movie stayed closer to the theme of the original series. Naturally, the movie had a subplot that was not present in the series, but it tied in well with the main plot--the search for the one-arm man. Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones made excellent adversaries in the movie.
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, by so wide a margin that it's ridiculous.
But if you're specifically looking for a live action adaption... I guess there's DeathNote.
