A comedy lol seriously - it'll give you insight on the person's humor, how they analyze what they see and hear, etc.
If you're already in a relationship, then I would come to an agreement together on the kin dof movie - I would say it depends on how both of you feel that evening.
    Relaxed? Love Story.
On top of the world? Action
    General good mood? Comedy
I think horrors are always an awful choice so...
Are you more business oriented? Spiritual? It depends on so many things, no one can really answer this but the two of you. Still, I hope I helped somehow.
    God bless you.

Thanks! It's really just for like a movie date as an alternative to going out or seeing something in theaters. We're both laid back, so any suggestions are appreciated.

Definitely NOT The Grudge.  I saw that on a date and he was scared!  (I wasn't).

Haha I'm terrified of scary movies so I definitely won't be watching that!

It depends on the couple as well as their individual taste.
Romantic comedies are very popular if both people have similar tastes. If someone prefers action/drama and the other wants romance there are movies that attempt to provide both. An old classic is "An Officer And A Gentleman" or something along the lines of "Date Night" which combines laughs and action, or straight up happy ending love stories like "Love Actually", "Something's Gotta Give", "The Holiday".
On the other hand if both people love suspense and horror there are lot of options.
