Interesting how no one's chimed in, but Pokemon (or Pocket Monsters in Japan) was an idea conceived by Satoshi Tajiri in the early 90s in his attempt to make a video game that recreates the joy he felt as a child when collecting bugs. After many revisions, the first versions of Pokemon Red and Green hit the Japanese market in 1994 or so. They later fixed many of the game's bugs and released Pokemon Blue in 1995. We here in the U.S. got Pokemon Red and Blue (based on the Japanese version of Blue) in late 1995/early 1996.
And then they made a TV series out of it in 1997. And it follows the game about as well as the The Hobbit film trilogy follows the book (a.k.a. extremely loosely, almost not at all).
