What is going wrong with Movies today?
Do you feel bored? Irritated? Worried? What do you think is going wrong with movies these days? Do you feel they are all similar? Why? What is going wrong with Movies today? Your thoughts...
I think people have always had varying tastes when it comes to movies.
Over the years I've come to recognize. Anyone looking for heavy dramas has to learn to be patient for fall and winter releases. Summer is all about "popcorn" blockbuster superhero movies, sequels, and animation. Occasionally a studio will release some counter programing movies during that period but the bulk of movies during summer are for teens and families.
The safest bet for studios is to release sequels or movies with similar themes which audience come out in droves to see but domestically and (worldwide). Naturally this has led some people to feel frustrated.
This fall will mark the (24th) release/sequel of a James Bond movie!
I've also known some "movie snobs" who will break out the "red ink" on any movie (that has the potential to become blockbuster) without seeing it not because of it's production value, acting, or directing of the movie but simply because they don't want to be in "the herd".
These are the same people that take pride in liking little known restaurants in small neighborhoods. The minute one of them becomes popular they have to move on! LOL!
My only concern is the "summer blockbuster" movies are starting to arrive earlier and earlier in the year. Batman VS Superman is scheduled for March 2016 and Marvel's "Dead Pool" is scheduled for February. Naturally both are trying to take advantage of school holiday weekends and breaks. It use to be studios would wait until Memorial Day weekend.
Kevin Hart had a big hit with his comedy "Ride Along" during MLK weekend in January 2014. It's been announced "the sequel" is coming out the same weekend in 2016. Once studios see there is major money to be made on "pop corn" movies in the "off season" the window will become smaller for movies with a small budget to be discovered and hold onto a decent number of movie screens.
What's wrong with the movies today is that there is an ever increasing need for them to justify themselves and to support the economy of people who help create them. That includes not only the cast and crew but also the writers, directors, distributors, make up men, computer artists, coaches... The list is endless.
The end result is always to be buts in the movie chairs in the theatres. To justify these costs of bigger, luxury seats and concession prices, the movies need to bigger with better effects that take advantage of the big screen and also have residual value in DVD (or On Demand) purchases.
The simple days when you only got one opportunity to see a film before you had to wait until it was shown again on network television (after it was cut and censored and made adjustable for television commercials) has been long over. It is rare that you'll see a cerebral, plot driven movie last on the big screen. Why? There is no money in it. However, you will see that movie made available later on for cable, DVD, or On Demand. It will still cost some money, but the medium and the need to put that on the big screen is much less.
In our ever increasing need to make technology bigger and better, we've actually begun to kill the motion picture industry and entertainment for cerebral entertainment. We now can get our bit of brain stimulation from our Kindles and buy books cheaper than ever. More people are reading because the price of literature has decreased and the access to books has increased. Now, if you want to get that good plot you can read it. Then if the story is good enough, someone will adapt it to the big screen or cable.
The other argument that can be made is that writers are more interested in making money than making a creative story. Think about it. When Dan Brown put out The DaVinci Code and when J.K. Rowling began to write Harry Potter books - people raced to read them without any thought of there being a movie. Why? The stories were new and interesting - the money that came from them was organically produced. The trend later became stories that were like Harry Potter and The DaVinci Code so the writers made money but the genre became saturated and uninteresting.
I hope this answers your question.
There is nothing wrong with the recently released movie titled, Max (Note: not to be confused with Mad Max). Watch it you will like it...
Almost all major-studio releases suck because they're aimed at 12 year old boys. I was fine with that when I *was* a 12 year old boy but it seems that since I'm no longer part of their "target demographic," very few new films interest me. Thankfully there are thousands of back-catalog films from days gone by that I can spend the rest of my life catching up on!!
Ya lots of good old movies are still there, thank you for responding.
In short the reason today's films are no longer creating future classics is do to shallow scripts, familiar stories, rapid-fire editing and constant sound. There is no longer the foundation of a quality script, with rich intelligent dialog. Films today focus on rehashing safe topics including stories about superheros or fairytales with an emphases on Computer Graphics. If only filmmakers would lower their budgets, slashing the CGI, hire excellent writers and take more risks on employing unknown yet skilled actors. Films would be far more suspenseful if they would allow for more silence, cutting out continuous background music and sound effects. Less sound will create a bigger impact. There is also no need for continuous editing. Elegantly allow the camera to hold the shot for a length of time so that we may be brought into the moment.
Those are some good ideas, thank you for commenting.
I don't think there's anything wrong with them. I especially love 3D! True, there's a lot of fluff out there, but there always has been. If you want quality movies, you can find them; you just have to make the effort to look.

Who is your favorite superhero to grace the big screen? With the recent success of comic book adaptation to hit theaters in recent years, there's little doubt that the production of these flicks will be stopping any time soon. Who is your favorite hero to receive a feature-lengthed film?

What are your thoughts on all the movie remakes coming out? Between the new comic book genre and the old toys/rides that have been turned into movies, do you miss new movies that have original plot ideas? Any thoughts?
