   This is intended as a just-for-fun debate.  The entire thing is based upon fiction.
   
   Question:  Should the Prime Directive apply to holodeck scenarios/characters? 
   
   Have fun pondering and supposing and fake arguing.

      No!! The holodeck is completely fictional, you could do or be whatever you wanted. Even Lt. Barkly was a "hero" in a holodeck program.

         Indeed; but what of holodeck characters who develop self-awareness, as in the "Fairhaven" program on Voyager?
         Or the Sherlock Holmes character on Next Gen?

            Picard once said that in the holodeck, energy is used to create matter, but only in there.
            
            The episode with Sherlock Holmes was where the holodeck was incorrectly programmed to produce a nemesis that could challenge Data and not the fictional character. So, the device went beyond parameters intended for its proper use to challenge a 24th century, virtually infallible android creature.
            
            In Voyager, holodeck characters have these emitter units on their sleeves so that holodeck characters could maintain viability outside the holodeck chamber.
            
            Now, you make me go back to my Hulu and revisit an episode or two....

                 Not all of the characters have emitters on their sleeves; in fact, none of them appeared outside the Fairhaven program except when they were called up for programming tweaks, with the 'naked' holodeck walls visible.
               The holographic doctor who serves the Voyager crew, however, WAS given a portable emitter for use within the program in one particular sequence.
