And it never stops. According to David Ayer, who directed the "Suicide Squad" movie, he had to issue an apology for making Harley Quinn too sexy in the film on social media. However even after apologizing for that, he's STILL having to apologize for it, as people online won't stop calling him a sexist for making Harley Quinn too sexy in "Suicide Squad."
what are your thoughts? Should Ayer keep apologizing for the rest of his freaking life over this? Or do you think he should just ignore them? Please discuss.
He should ignore it if it has no effect on the funding and support he is getting from producers. People are going to whine, and an apology is trying to stand up when all someone wants you to do is lay down. They'll keep jumping on his throat until he willingly stops breathing. No use to fight it.
I'd also argue that if we look at Margot Robbie's past roles, chosen persona as a sex symbol, and general portrayal of the self we can surmise that it wasn't just the directors choice but a combined effort. Who most likely arranged the sexiness of the character? Margot Robbie, her agent, the producers, the executives, and the market's incessant call for sex.
Sex sells, and I doubt the director even made the conscious decision to sexualize the character (who was arguably already a sex symbol to many) before heavy influence was applied to him. When I say influence, of course I mean he had no real choice in the matter, he just did what he was told. Of course, all assumptions in ignorance on my part.
