Just finished listening to a string of Greatful Dead classics with tears in my eyes. I am the  Deadesthead. Jerry said once that he hoped to learn to play guitar before he died! He had the temerity to be humble.

Clapton is God yes, but once his temerity showed when he claimed he was the greatest guitarist. He could say it again and we will say yeah yeah

    Who really was the greatest?

    I say both

          What are you confused about?

Jerry Garcia and Eric Clapton are the two greatest guitarists of all time?

          Please.

They don't rank in the top 5.

You need to broaden your musical scope.

I didn't think of Hendrix until after I posted.

Randy Rhodes was definitely a great guitarist.

He's been dead so long I forgot him.

                yeah but yeah

But pioneering counts. That is where Clapton and Hendrix AND Jerry stand out

                  No.

Blues guitarists have been around a lot longer than those guys.

They copied from them although Hendrix was a little more innovative.

It's "Grateful Dead." I'm not sure you can be the "Deadesthead" if you don't know that.....

Who else is there in the same mold?

I don't know about the same mold unless you mean Blues Guitarists.

        Then
        Stevie Ray Vaughn
        Jimmy Vaughn
Jimmy Page (although not limited to Blues)
        Duane Allman
        Robert Johnson
        Muddy Waters

        The list is long.

Jimi Hendrix is definitely on my list, but there is no way I could choose who is the best.

I just know there is better than Jerry Garcia and Eric Clapton.

I actually wrote a hub.  It is in consideration of lead guitarists.

Great Lead Guitar Players. Who Is The Best Lead Guitar Player?

    Also influential guitarists:

Guitar Players Who Influenced Rock Music

    Clapton made this list!
