I am a certified teacher and have been tutoring young children for more than 30 years. I am sharing my experience in the tutorial business.

Show Your Love For Books:

Love for books is very important in a child's life. Not only will books serve as learning tools but they will also make the child develop the habit of reading and learning new things.

Before teaching your child to love books, you must love books too. Children will not love books if they cannot see any books at home. The point here is that it is impossible for a child to love something that he or she doesn’t know exists.

If there are books at home and the kids can see you reading and appreciating books, the tendency is for them to love books too. What they see in you is what they will do.

It is also important that the children know the importance of books. If they learn the usefulness of books then they will appreciate books just like you.

If you aim to teach your child to love books these are the key to attaining it.

  • Start while the children are young

As soon as your baby is born; you can introduce books to your baby by picking a book and telling stories to your baby. Singing and reciting rhymes and poems from the books are also ideal activities for introducing books to your child. Your baby can sense and feel what’s happening around him.

By the time your baby can sit down, he is now ready to hold a book and turn the pages with your help. Whatever book you let your child touch, you have to talk about it in a language he can understand. The important thing is, you are letting your child appreciate books and the contents even at a very young age. This will help the child to learn how to read early.

  • Show a good example

Children inherit many characteristics and behaviors from their parents. If you love books and you demonstrate your love for books to your kids; there is a big chance that they will love books too. Book lovers have books accessible around the house. They can be in the living room, in the kitchen, in the bedroom and even in the bathroom. Do you know that one of the best places to read books is when you are in the bathroom?

  • Allow for easy access of books around the house

You can put books in the nursery room where the kids can easily pick a book to appreciate. Even if the kids cannot read yet, giving them books to appreciate the colorful pictures is very helpful in developing their love for books. Books can be anywhere in the house so that the children can easily pick them and read them or scan them.

  • Provide good reading books at home

Always provide good books that the children can read or appreciate. If you taught your children to love books early on; you will not have a hard time encouraging them to read. They will always find a book to read or appreciate even if they are very young.

  • Set a time to read books together

One of the best ways to teach the children to love books is to have a regular story time. Bedtime stories are always fun to children. They love stories and they love to read stories with their mom and dad. No matter how busy you are, always have time to read books with your children. Make it a habit to read books with the children, whether at home or in the library or in the bookstore.

  • Set a budget for books

If you can buy clothes and toys for your kids; why not include books? Books are a necessity too for children. You can always buy books at a cheaper price if you search for them. If your children love books, they will always ask for them.

If you go shopping, visit the bookstore and let your children choose books to buy. Books are treasures too.

  • Buy books that the children like

If you have been instilling love for books to your children early on, then they already have some types of books they like. This is good so you should buy the books they like to read. Some children love collecting book series. If your kids are this type, you should be happy for them.

Books are treasures. They are like teachers who teach so many things to our children. That is why teaching the children to love books is very important.

I bought the enitre collection of books for my kids, and also for my nephews who live in California. The kids' ages range from 4-10 yrs. old, and all of them enjoy the books. My kids find the books to be funny and fun to read. My husband and I appreciate the creative way that the books reinforce the Armenian language and culture to our kids. Great initiative by the author to capture in story-form what we as Armenian parents have experienced during our youth. As more and more generations of American-Armenians grow farther away from our foreign-born parents' customs and rituals, these books allow us to bring the concepts back and share the funny anecdotes with our children so that they can continue to exist in their repetoire of the Armenian culture.

Children "do as we do, not as we say":) Old quote, but oh so true! I believe like you that we have to show the way and do the things we like our children to do.
