I think it is a larger cultural issue. Here in the USA we place our kids way, way too high up in status, inflating their importance in the family and give too many privileges that are not age appropriate (including engaging in adult behaviors). We give far too much and far too young. Now, I don't mean our kids should not be important, of course they are. But when folks give them cell phones and computers at age ten, let them watch R rated movies, stay up late, dress like little adults, and encourage them to 'act as if' they are adults and become amused by that, what do you think the result will be?
