I am a single mother and have been decades.  My girls and I had some very tight times; but, I always made sure that at Christmas we put together a small gift for someone less fortunate, that we occasionally gave to the food bank, or any other way we could help.

My children watched me walk out of my way to donate a bag of books to a charity that would realize a few dollars for their charity.  Some of their school friends had parents that didn't send any lunch with them - those kids came home with mine and ate at my house.  Our food may not have been the fanciest; but, it was nutritious and sufficient.  We had shelter; and, most importantly we had each other.

I always tried to show them that as little as we had, someone else always had less and there were ways we could save a dollar or two to donate to someone who needed it more than we did.

I am pleased to say that my girls are 33 and 30 today; and, still uphold our family tradition of helping where we can - no matter how small the contribution.

I always show my kids that we can help other people not just my donating money but donating our time and talents. Two to three times a year we go through our stuff and give away the things we haven't used. We volunteer at church, charities and community organizations. I taught my kids that even going to a neighbor's house (one who may not get many visitors) and saying hello is a nice way to show others kindness.
