How common is it for a child to be terrified of an inanimate object?
It's not unusual. Kids can be afraid of anything. So can adults. Maybe the kid is scared of it for a reason, like an older sibling told them it was scary or could come alive or something. It all depends. Also, if the object, like a vacuum, makes noise, it could scare them because of that. Maybe it's something they're just not used to, or just don't like.

I agree that it's not uncommon for a child to be fearful of something. Fear usually stems from something unknown or misunderstood, and there's a lot of things that falls into that category for a child. It could also relate to a negative experience, such as fear of water from having fallen into a pool.
