    There are liquids that you can paint onto the thumb that tasty nasty. These are similar to the type to stop nail biting.
    Another, gentler way, simply pull the thumb out of the mouth. This will need to be done multiple times until the habit is broken.
    If the person is old enough, suggest they sit on their hands. If the thumb sucking is at night, place socks on the hands.
    This is of course a habit that needs breaking otherwise it will lead to distorted 'buck teeth' which will alter the shape of the jaw causing problems which will need to be corrected with braces.

    I believe applying bitter-tasting things on thumb too cruel. Just stick a paper plaster if the child is co-operating. Otherwise, talk to the child about its bad effects until the child realizes it and is willing to co-operate.
