What is your best advice for overcoming fear?

Fear affects just about every person in some way or another every day. What is your best advice for conquering the fears inside ourselves?

    Hi rclinton-

Most true or incapaciting fears are irrational and out of proportion and can best be dealt with by understanding the reality of both the fear-causing issue and yourself.  Once a bright light is shown on the issue and it is disected, or broken down to its basic parts, the fear can be drained.  Additionally, understanding one's self and your reactions is a necesssary step to put the issue in perspective.

This is not to say this is easy, but it is doable.  No one wants to live in fear, so the effort is well spent.

For fears that are real, understanding helps them to.  Fear in proper doses, is adaptive, useful and protective.  It can also be stimulating, thought-provoking, and energizing.

Unfounded fears, phobias and the like are generally a mistaken pereception resulting in a non-adaptive response.  Desensitization is a common technique to treat such  patients and invloves confronting the fear inducing issue in small doses (initially)  in a controlled environment.

'Feel the fear and do it anyway!' . The more ya brave it, the easier it becomes---'practice makes perfect' and all that :-)

Believe in what is bigger than yourself. It helps most if that something is altogether good and can make up for your weaknesses and failures, and make everything come out alright. Then, we need not fear ourselves or our own weaknesses and shortcomings and can trust that there is still hope.

It's not courage if you're not scared... I forget which movie that's from. But it's so true. You have to realize that fear is natural and nine times out of ten it's not lethal. So if it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger. More incentive to conquer your fear!
