Were did the saying "good night" or "sweet dreams" come from?
I found out this words mostly in Small Message Services. But naturally it become one of the key words in the night time. In my vision it came from the Enhanced mind of a SMS maker. And it found the popularity.
People would wish someone a good night without dreams or that their dreams be sweet. Just a nice way of saying that they don't want you having nightmares.
What!, I didn't even know that they come from somewhere! ha ha.
I would say it's just another form of greeting, such as saying "Good Evening" or "Good Morning" to someone you come in contact with. "Sweet Dreams" is something that I would picture parents saying to their children to wish them a night free of nightmares. My grandmother used to say it to me every night when I was a little girl.
I've always thought it was simply a shortening of 'I hope you have a good night' or 'I hope you have sweet dreams', a bit like 'Hello' was once 'Hail to you'.
