Kids Cook Monday Recipe: Caramel Sauce for Popcorn
Cooking with Kids
Popcorn is a staple snack food in most Western homes. Those who like tradition can pop up a batch from scratch in less than 10 minutes while microwave popcorn makes it feasible for young children to easily fix themselves an afternoon treat.
Stores offer a variety of flavours and seasonings for popcorn. In our home, we love home-made caramel sauce. With no prep time and only 2 minutes to cook, caramel sauce turns popcorn into a decadent dessert.

Cook Time
Before You Start
You will need:
- 2 tablespoons
- Sauce pot
- Popcorn (pre-made)
Cook over medium heat.
This recipe does not require strict measuring. As you will see in the video below, I simply use a regular spoon and eyeball the amounts.
Want more?
The ratio of ingredients is 1:1:1. This means that if you want to make a bigger batch of sauce, simply add one extra spoonful of each ingredient ... or two of each ... or three of each ... You get the idea :-)
Ingredients
- 2 TBSP Butter
- 2 TBSP Brown Sugar
- 2 TBSP Corn Syrup, (or honey)
What do YOU prefer?
Do you prefer to use corn syrup or honey for your caramel sauce?
Amazing Alternative to Corn Syrup
A lot of folks are health conscious and worry about the affects of corn syrup. One of my youtube viewers wrote and asked if this recipe works with honey. We gave it a try and the answer is a resounding: YES!!
In fact, the honey version turned out lighter in flavour and with a mildly refreshing finish. It is so much tastier that we've decided not to go back to corn syrup. We encourage you to try this recipe with honey instead of corn syrup to see if you like it as much as we do!
Bringing It All Together
- Add ingredients to pot.
- Stir constantly over medium heat until all the ingredients have melted together into a creamy sauce.
- Drizzle over popcorn and enjoy!
TIPS
For safety information when cooking with children, read Setting Kitchen Rules.
Caution!
Caramel Sauce gets extremely hot and can cause serious burns! Younger children should let adult and older children make the sauce while they help by pouring the pre-made popcorn into the bowl.
Things to Try
→ You can also mix in your favourite nuts, dried fruit, chocolate chips.
→ Don't like popcorn? Try this sauce over vanilla ice cream!
