Have you ever baked a layer cake from scratch...

...not a box mix, including the frosting or other topping)? Tell us what you made, how it turned out, who you made it for, etc. etc.

Yes, I have. I used my Mama' recipes. But unlike her, my from-scratch never turned out quite as heavenly. That woman had a magical knack, I am sure!

I have no doubt you are correct! My results with recipes never turn out as good "as mommy made it", either! I think mom's are magical beings... Haha

That's the only way I bake cakes.  My signature cake is the Sour Cream Pound cake, which I posted the recipe on HubPages.  So far it always turns out right. However you asked about a layer cake, and yes I do that too. My favorite frosting is butter cream.

Butter cream is awesome! My favorite is sour cream-based frostings, like you put on pumpkin bars but wouldn't put on a layer cake. :-) Thanks for your answer, fastfreta!

I make three a year, one for each of my kids' birthdays smile. What I make is always the choice of the birthday kid, but the frosting is always buttercream. They're always layer cakes, I suspect because they like the extra helping of frosting. My oldest even wanted a German chocolate cake for this last birthday until I told him that it traditionally doesn't have buttercream frosting. Mine always turn out with great consistency and taste, but I've been working on improving my decorating skills. That said, this last cake just got plain buttercream frosting and then I stuck a couple Star Wars toys on it to look like they were battling each other, and my son thought it was the greatest thing ever.

    I didn't know cakes come from a box! ;o)
I have been baking cakes with my family since I was old enough to lick the spatula.
    Maple Molasses
    Maraschino Cherry
    Midnight Chocolate
    Coconut
    Vanilla Bean
    Carrot
    Spice
    Ice Box
    Angel Food
These are the standard cakes I use for birthdays and get togethers.

Yes!  I make cakes for a few holidays and birthdays, but they usually use a box mix.  A few years ago, however, I made my very first layer cake with frosting completely from scratch.  And it was amazing!  The recipe?  My Grandma's carrot cake with orange cream cheese frosting.  It has become our tradition for Easter.  I wrote a hub about it. smile  SO yummy!
