Is it possible to use a small packet of gelatin instead of powdered milk for firming the yogurt?
Yes, by all means. Be careful, though, to make sure you've dissolved the gelatin in hot water and cooled it down before adding it to the yogurt (so it doesn't kill the beneficial yogurt cultures) and don't add too much - you want firm yogurt, not a hockey puck! ;-)
